At the age of 16, Sammi Cheng won the TVB's
New Talent singing contest back in 1988, following which
she was offered a contract by Capital Artists. Since
then, she had worked hard but it wasn't until 1995, when
Sammi changed her record label to Warner Records,
that her career really took off.
Under Warner Records,
Sammi began to experience improving album sales and in 1996,
her debut Mandarin release "Worth It",
took Taiwan by storm. The album logged 600,000 sales
in Taiwan and more than 40,000 in Singapore.
From a mere $360 a month when she started out, Sammi
pocketed about $180,000 a month in 1996! Also in the
same year, she was the only female star to be in the Hong
Kong top 10 celebrities earnings list.
Since then, the song, "Can't
Let Go Of You" has gained symbolic value of her rise to
popularity, and now features in all her concerts, from Hong
Kong to North America. Sammi's style
of music is more to the commercial stuff ranging from ballads
to dance tracks. Her voice has this unique type of rich
sultriness packed with emotion and power. Although
the media has been linking her romantically to Hong Kong
actor-singer, Andy Hui, Sammi remains nonchalant
about it, preferring to concentrate on her career rather
than love-life.
Other than her music,
Sammi has also acted in many movies. The most famous
being "Needing You" which she was nominated
Best Actress during the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2001.
Although she did not win the award, the nomination
is sufficient to show her acting skills. Even though
Sammi does not put winning awards on her priority
list, she continues to work hard and gives her best
in her career.
